Hello everyone. I hope you are all enjoying the summer. Be sure to find time for a vacation, rest and relaxation before the busy fall months began. We had a great turn out at the general meeting. Thank you all your meeting attendance, education, volunteerism and support to the AfAHC. We all do great work to educate and support our communities, and it’s great to learn and share information. Chaun Tatum-Willams, Program Coordinator for African American Male Wellness Agency: Pressure Check Study: Examining what contribution a community health worker can bring for health care planning related to hypertension.
Why: Hypertension is the leading cause of stroke and heart disease.
Details: 18 month study, where participants are randomized to 1 of 3 groups. All groups receive blood pressure cuffs and education on monitoring/managing blood pressure levels. Some groups receive more assistance with managing hypertension and making lifestyle changes.
Eligibility: Aged 18 years or older, average blood pressure of 135/85, not planning to become pregnant, not receiving cancer treatment and no kidney damage.

Dr. Creaque Charles Taylor, TSU Registered Pharmacist specializing in geriatric pharmacy: CardioCare Quest: A Game to Improve Heart Health. Interested in what cultural events that occur in our homes that contribute to heart health.
Why: Heart disease is considered the silent killer, and African Americans are 2x more likely to die from hypertension than other races.
Target Population: African Americans in Houston area aged 18+ years diagnosed with hypertension, and their families.
Reinforce education and management of heart health in a fun way. Program includes a 7 day work book where you record your health behaviors and a trivia game is developed from this book
This is a 6 month program, ending in April 2026.
