COURSE OVERVIEW
The Certified Melanin Skin Health Educator (CMSHE) training series is a specialized program designed to equip Community Health Workers (CHWs) with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the unique dermatological health needs of individuals with melanin-rich skin. This initiative is part of the Skin Deep: Melanin Matters initiative, which aims to combat health disparities in Black communities by fostering awareness and understanding of skin health.
PURPOSE OF COURSE
The primary goals of the CMSHE training are to:
Build Clinical Awareness: Enhance CHWs' understanding of common dermatological conditions that disproportionately affect Black communities.
Promote Cultural Humility: Encourage respectful and culturally sensitive interactions with clients regarding skin health.
Empower Community Health Workers: Provide practical tools and strategies for CHWs to effectively educate their communities about skin health and advocate for equitable care.
COURSE STRUCTURE
The CMSHE training consists of a four-module series:
Module 1: Dermatology 101 in Black Skin
Module 2: Scalp and Hair Health
Module 3: Skin, Scalp, and Hair Equity
Module 4: Building Trust and Making Referrals
Each module incorporates interactive elements, including discussions, case studies, and practical assessments, to ensure participants can apply their learning in real-world scenarios.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Participants will:
Identify common skin conditions affecting Black communities.
Understand how these conditions present differently in darker skin tones.
Apply culturally appropriate care strategies to improve health outcomes.
Certification: Upon approval, participants who successfully complete the training will receive certification as a Certified Melanin Skin Health Educator. This certification is recognized by the DSHS and includes Continuing Education Units (CEUs), enhancing the professional credentials of CHWs.
The CMSHE certification plays a crucial role in addressing systemic inequities in dermatologic care faced by Black communities. By training CHWs to recognize and respond to the unique dermatological needs of melanin-rich skin, the initiative aims to improve health outcomes and foster trust within communities.
